끝없이 펼쳐진 남극이 영원할 것 같아 보인다. 

그러나 아니다,

수 백 미터 아래 얼음의 밑둥이 녹고 있다.

바닷물이 얼음의 밑둥을 녹인다. 

남극 얼음이 녹고 미끄러져서 바다로 흘러들어간다, 

나사 위성 탐사에 의하면 지난 10년간 매년 평균 1,300 억톤의 얼음이 바다로 흘러들어갔다.  

이는 엠파이어 스테이트빌딩 356,000 개 보다 무겁고, 올림픽 수영장 130만개 이상에 물을 채울 양이다.

녹는 속도는 가속화 되고있다.

최악의 시나리오는 세기말까지 3 미터 해수면 상승이고

이는 해안에 발달한 대도시들을 삼켜서 문명의 대변화를 일으킬 것이다. 

남극의 일부는 너무 빨리 녹고 있어서 기후변화의 '그라운드 제로'가 될 것이 확실하다, 고

하바드대 지구물리학자 미트로비카가 말했다.

남극 반도 (Antarctic peninsula) 는 얼음이 녹아 땅이 바닷물에 드러났기 때문에 가장 빨리 녹고 있으며

나사에 의하면 매년 490억톤의 얼음이 소실되고 있다.  

따뜻한 바닷물에 얼음이 녹아 땅이 드러나며,

땅이 드러나면서 기온이 따뜻해지는 악순환이 일어나고 있다. 

남극 반도 기온이 지난 50년간 섭씨 3도 올랐다,

이는 지구평균보다 매우 빠르다, 고 칠레 남극 협회 빙하연구가 리카르도 자나가 말했다.

  빙하 밑둥이 녹아서 바다로 미끄러지면서 거대한 빙하들이 떠다닌다.

From the ground in this extreme northern part of Antarctica, spectacularly white and blinding ice

seems to extend forever. What can't be seen is the battle raging thousands of feet

(hundreds of meters) below to re-shape Earth.

Water is eating away at the Antarctic ice, melting it where it hits the oceans. As the ice sheets slowly thaw,

water pours into the sea ? 130 billion tons of ice (118 billion metric tons) per year for the past decade,

according to NASA satellite calculations. That's the weight of more than 356,000 Empire State Buildings,

enough ice melt to fill more than 1.3 million Olympic swimming pools. And the melting is accelerating.

In the worst case scenario, Antarctica's melt could push sea levels up 10 feet (3 meters) worldwide in a

century or two, recurving heavily populated coastlines.

Parts of Antarctica are melting so rapidly it has become "ground zero of global climate change without a doubt,"

said Harvard geophysicist Jerry Mitrovica.

Here on the Antarctic peninsula, where the continent is warming the fastest because the land sticks out in the

warmer ocean, 49 billion tons of ice (nearly 45 billion metric tons) are lost each year, according to NASA.

The water warms from below, causing the ice to retreat on to land, and then the warmer air takes over.

Temperatures rose 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius) in the last half century, much faster than

Earth's average, said Ricardo Jana, a glaciologist for the Chilean Antarctic Institute
